The day I brought Cinder home, she was scared. I introduced her to my big sweet dog and my other cat. She was scared. She finally jumped out of the box and found a place to hide. She spent most of the next eleven years hiding. Eventually I acquired a wife who had her own cat. Cinder continued hiding under the bed, but it was harder with an extra person and a kitten around. Eventually Cinder couldn't just wait until no one was around to sneak off to the litter box, since my wife was usually sitting near the path.
Slowly Cinder got braver. She came out when we were around. Eventually she discovered that we didn't try to eat her. Finally she started coming around us for a light pat on the back or a little attention. Not long after, she died of kidney failure. She spent eleven years hiding from imagined dangers and 18 months enjoying life. Cinder taught me not to spend my life hiding from imagined dangers.
