A Short History of Motion Pictures

When moving pictures were first invented, the films were of action, people working, streetcar rolling through town, not much story. Quickly simple stories evolved, then more sophisticated stories. Technical innovations were introduced such as motor driven cameras (24 frames per second) instead of hand crank (various speeds and oven fast jerky motion), sound, color, and 3D. Three D was a fad that quickly faded, wide screen was introduced to bring people back to theaters upon the popularity of television, better sound and IMAX also brought people back. Three D even came back and new technology made it possible to produce synthetic 3D in old movies.

Finally, after one hundred years, motion pictures have come full circle and we are back to films with action and no story. What's next?
