Fort Tejon was first garrisoned by the United States Army on August 10, 1854 and was abandoned ten years later on September 11, 1864. The fort was established to control Indians in the area. About half of the area of the fort still exists along with some buildings. Fort Tejon is along side Interstate 5 about 50 miles north of Los Angeles. Fort Tejon is an important part of California History and worth taking a rest stop to visit.
