The Hollywood bowl is an outdoor amphitheater that has come to symbolize Southern California. The Southern California climate allows for popular summer concerts at "The Bowl." The bowl itself is actually a natural canyon (Bolton Canyon) and not the curving structure. The first audiences sat on simple wooden benches. The Hollywood Bowl has actually had several bandshells, prosceniums, over the years since the first performance in 1922. Some bandshells were temporary structures, lasting only a season or two. Two bandshells were designed by the Lloyd Wright, eldest son of Frank Lloyd Wright. Hunt is responsible for one shell, The current bandshell, or acoustical shell, designed by Myron Hunt, was constructed in1926 or 1929.
